The Golden Chariot

The Train

The Golden Chariot is a luxury tourist train, connecting the important tourist spots in the Indian states of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry depending on the selected itinerary. Named after a renowned world heritage site, the Stone Chariot in Hampi; the regalia promises to take the enthusiasts on a journey through the eternal historical marvels, swish palaces, innate wildlife and serene beaches.

General Information

The Golden Chariot is an upgraded version of world famous Palace on Wheels and started in 2008.

The Golden Chariot Train is now operating on two different 7 Nights circuits of South India, both tours departing from Bangalore on alternate Mondays viz. Pride of South and Southern Splendour.

Highlights of Pride of South train tour circuit includes visit to Mysore Palace, Kabini Tiger Reserve , UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi Palace ruins, Golden Beaches of Goa & UNESCO World Heritage Site of Badami Cave sculptures.

Highlights of Southern Splendour train tour circuit includes visit to former French Colony of Pondicherry, Beaches & Backwaters of Kerala, besides UNESCO World Heritage site of Brihadeeswara Temple.

Coaches

Each one of the 18 thematic coaches on board The Golden Chariot is designed to be your very own personal kingdom. The 44 cabins fully equipped with modern amenities like wi-fi environment, plasma TV and attached baths. Yet, it is set in the past. The cabins are inspired and draw heavily from the Mysore and Belur-Halebidu schools of art and architecture.

Nala and Ruchi Restaurants

The train has two restraints in board that dish out vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisines. The vegetarian restaurant is named after Nala the mythological chef. While the non-vegetarian restaurant Ruchi means fine taste in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India. The interior décor of the restaurants is based in the ruins of Hampi and Halebid. The restaurants have two/four seater cabins that ensure privacy and comfort during your meals.

Madira - Lounge Bar

The Golden Chariot also has a bar on board that allows the passengers to enjoy fine spirits. The passengers can also watch performances by local artisans as they savour their drinks and reflect on the day’s travel. The elegant seating and decor at the bar is modelled after the world famous Mysore Palace.

Conference Coach

The Golden Chariot ensures that even while traveling amongst the historical sites in Karnataka, its privileged passengers do not let their work suffer. The train has all the modern facilities and equipment’s that make it an office on the move. The train has a separate conference coach that has a seating capacity for up to thirty business leaders. The coach also has a forty two inch LCD television and offers high speed internet connection so as to allow its passengers connected with the world outside.

Gym Coach

The passenger’s aboard the Golden Chariot do not have to miss their daily exercise regimen while they enjoy a quaint heritage tour on a luxury train. The golden Chariot has separate gym coach that has an Ayurveda centre along with a spa and a gym to help passengers relieve stress and remain healthy.

Day 1 Bangalore - Mysore

15:00 hrs: Report at Hotel Taj West End, Bangalore for check in formalities of Golden Chariot tour.

16:00 hrs: Nature walk in the heritage gardens of the Taj, followed by Hi-tea and brief orientation on the Golden Chariot tour.

17:30 hrs: Board an AC coach and proceed to Chitrakala Parishad to enjoy cultural program and later be escorted to Yashwantpura Railway Station (Bangalore) to board The Golden Chariot train.

20:15 hrs: Traditional welcome at Yeshwanthpur railway station and board The Golden Chariot train.

21:00 hrs: Train departs to Mysore, dinner and overnight on board.

Day 2 Mysore - Kabini - Bandipur

Early morning arrival at Mysore station.

10:00 hrs: Post breakfast on board; depart by an AC coach for 3 hours long drive to Kabini Forest Reserve (Nagarhole), en route visiting Mysore palace.

13:15 hrs: Check-into Jungle Lodge on arrival at Kabini, followed by lunch and brief rest.

15:45 hrs: Guided Jeep excursion to Nagarhole Jungles, former hunting retreat of Mysore Royalty

Forests of Kabini /Bandipur/Nagarhole are spread over 600 Sq. km. and was declared protected reserve in 1973 under Project Tiger; and now called Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Mostly covered by teak, rosewood and dry deciduous forest; it is home to elephants, tigers, leopard, herds of deer, wild boars etc., besides numerous birds and reptiles.

19:40 hrs: Return to the Jungle Lodge to share excitement of sighting of various wild animals over screening of wild life film, followed by dinner and overnight stay in jungle lodge at Kabini.

Day 3 Mysore

06:30 hrs: Early morning boat ride for bird safari on Kabini River.

08:00 hrs: Post boat ride, breakfast at the jungle lodges resort.

09:30 hrs: Depart for Mysore by an AC coach, the land of the fascinating palaces and gardens.

11:30 hrs: Back on board the Golden Chariot.

15:30 hrs: Post lunch on board; depart by an AC coach for guided sightseeing tour of Srirangapatnam visiting DariyaDaulat and Tipu Mausoleum with free time for shopping.

18:00 hrs: Cultural dance and dinner and luxury Palace hotel.

22:00 hrs: Back to the Golden Chariot, overnight on board.

Day 4 Mysore - Hassan - Hospet

05:00 hrs: Depart from Mysore to Hassan.

07:30 hrs: Arrival Hassan, breakfast on board.

09:00 hrs: Depart by an AC coach for guided sightseeing tour of Shravanabelagola.

(Please note that you would have to climb close to 700 steps to experience the architectural marvel. Only those who can undertake this are advised to do so. Guests unwilling to climb can stay back on board The Golden Chariot).

Shravanabelagola is an important Jain pilgrim centre. Home to Asia's largest monolithic statue Lord Gomateswara at 58 ft., it looms atop the picturesque Vindhyagiri Hill.

13:00 hrs: Return to train and enjoy lunch on board.

15:00 hrs: Depart by an AC coach for guided temples tour of Belur and Halebid.

Belur is famous for the centuries old Chennakesava Temple, built by Hoysala Vishnuvardhana, to commemorate his victory over the Cholas.

Halebid is the abode of the Hoysaleswara Temple. Perched on a star-shaped base amidst lawns, the temple is a sculptural extravaganza.

19:00 hrs: Return to the train and depart for Hospet.

20:00 hrs: Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 5 Hospet

06:00 hrs: Arrival Hospet, breakfast on board.

08:30 hrs: Depart by an AC coach for guided sightseeing tour of Hampi and explore Virupaksha temple, Queens's bath, elephant stables, local crafts bazaar, royal enclosure, hazara Rama temple. Set amidst an awesome boulder-strewn landscape along the Tungabhadra River, Hampi is a World Heritage site.

13:00 hrs: Return to train and enjoy lunch on board.

15:30 hrs: Depart by an AC coach for guided sightseeing tour of famous Vijaya Vittala temple complex and the marvel stone chariot.

20:00 hrs: Return on board for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6 Badami

04:00 hrs: Depart from Hospet to Badami, breakfast on board.

08:30 hrs: Arrival at Badami - abode to various temples, gateways, forts, inscriptions and sculptures; depart by an AC coach for guided sightseeing tour of Badami Caves and Pattadakal. Picturesquely situated at the mouth of a ravine between two rocky hills, the exquisite sculptures and the rust red sandstone cliffs of Badami tell many a tale of yore. You just have to climb a flight of steps to reach the four ancient rock-cut caves replete with carved pillars and bracket figures, all hewn out of red sandstone on the precipice of a hill.

13:00 hrs: Return to train and enjoy lunch on board as the Golden Chariot departs for Goa. Spend your afternoon leisurely on the train as the train rolls towards Goa, famous for its golden beaches. Do peep from your window for a feast of the natural beauty of the landscapes that passes you by.

20:00 hrs: Dinner on board, arrival to Goa past midnight.

Day 7 Goa

08:00 hrs: Breakfast on board The Golden Chariot.

10:00 hrs: Guided sightseeing tour of Goa in an AC coach, located on the western coast of India in the coastal belt known as Konkan. The seventh day of your journey starts with visiting the beautiful Churches of Old Goa and an Old Portuguese house to witness its architectural splendour.

14:00 hrs: Lunch at the luxury resort in Goa followed by beach stroll and Hi-Tea.

18:30 hrs: Return to The Golden Chariot and depart for Bangalore, dinner on board.

Day 8 Bangalore

11:00 hrs: Enjoy your breakfast aboard the train as it arrives to the Yeshwantpur Railway Station in Bangalore. On your arrival in the city you will be given a warm farewell to mark the end of this memorable journey.

Day 1 Bangalore - Chennai

07:30 hrs: Arrival Chennai, breakfast on board.

10:00 hrs: Depart by AC coach for half day guided excursion to Mahabalipuram town. The 8th Century built Sea Shore temples and stone carvings at Mahabalipuram have withstood erosion over centuries and have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Krishna’s Butter Ball, Arjuna’s Penance, Ganesha Temple and Five Rathas temple.

13:30 hrs: Lunch at Radisson Blu Temple Bay hotel.

16:00 hrs: Post Hi-Tea, guided sightseeing tour of Shore Shiva temple.

17:00 hrs: After leisurely lunch at beach resort in Mahabalipuram depart by an AC coach for Puducherry Railway station to board the Golden Chariot.

18:30 hrs: Return on board the Golden Chariot for dinner and overnight stay while the train is stabled at Puducherry Railway Station.

Day 3 Wed: Puducherry – Tanjavur

Pondicherry (or Puducherry), a French colonial settlement in India until 1954, is now a Union Territory town bounded by the south-eastern Tamil Nadu state. Its French legacy is preserved in its French Quarter, with tree-lined streets, mustard-coloured colonial villas and chic boutiques. French is still widely spoken here. Seaside villas and cobbled streets are more reminiscent of the South of France than the South of India!

10:00 hrs: Post breakfast on board depart by an AC coach for guided morning sightseeing tour of Puducherry visiting Auroville Ashram, Matra Mandir and shopping in the Ashram. Conceived as a tribute to Sri Aurobindo, Auroville is an entirely new concept in education and urban living. The Aurobindo Ashram is known to the world over as the "Centre of Integral Yoga". Sri Aurobindo, India’s philosopher around 1920 founded it.

13:30 hrs: Lunch at Sarovar Promenade Hotel and return to train for brief rest.

17:00 hrs: Evening visit to Aurobindo Ashram and Ganesha Temple. Enjoy stroll through 19th Century built cobbled streets called Latin quarters, built by former French Colonial rulers & time free on Promenade beach.

19:00 hrs: Return to the Golden Chariot, dinner on board as the train moves to Tanjavur.

Day 4 Tanjavur - Trichy - Madurai

07:30 hrs: Arrival at Tanjavur Railway Station, breakfast on board.

10:00 hrs: Depart by AC coach for guided morning sightseeing tour of famous Brihadeshwara Temple or the big temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, built by King Rajaraja I in the 11th Century to celebrate a military victory. The temple is a tribute as well as a reflection of the power of Raja Raja Chola I. The temple is most famous due to its uniqueness as among the greatest glories of the Indian architecture. The complex that houses the main sanctum is known as the Periya Kovil. It is located amidst the fortified walls that were added to the building in the 16th Century. This architectural masterpiece has been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is built over 29 square bases and is surrounded by moat on two sides and Grand Anaicut River on the other side. The walls of the complex are adorned by beautiful paintings belonging to the Chola and Nayak period.

14:00 hrs: Lunch at Ideal River View resort

16:00 hrs: Departure to Trichy by an AC coach.

18:00 hrs: Visit the famous Sri Rangam Temple in Trichy, dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Lord Vishnu and covers a total area of 156 acres. This temple is also amongst the first ones of 108 divya desams of the abode of Lord Vishnu. Constructed in Dravidian style of architecture and has been glorified by the literature of early Tamil literature canon. It’s the largest functioning temple in the world. Some noticeable features in its architecture include 21 surrounding ‘gopurams’ along with an ornate gateway, which is also the tallest ‘gopuram’ of India. There is also a royal temple tower in the place, which covers a base area of 32500 sq. ft. and has a height of 196 ft. It also comprises a hall containing 1000 pillars.

19:00 hrs: Return to the comforts of the Golden Chariot for dinner and overnight stay on board as the train moves to Madurai.

Day 5 Madurai - Nagercoil

Early morning arrival to Madurai, one of the oldest cities in India and famous for its silks, pearls and spices. It was this lucrative trade that let its Pandyan Kings to erect the mighty Meenakshi temple in 13th Century.

10:00 hrs: Post breakfast on board, depart by an AC coach for guided morning sightseeing tour of famous Meenakshi temple. The enormous temple complex is dedicated to Shiva, known here as Sundareshvara and his consort Parvati or Meenakshi. The original temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the entire credit for making the temple as splendid as it is today goes to the Nayaks. The Nayaks ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th Century and left a majestic imprint of their rule in the Meenakshi - Sundareswarar Temple. The temple complex is within a high-walled enclosure, at the core of which are the two sanctums for meenakshi and Sundareswaran, surrounded by a number of smaller shrines and grand pillared halls.

13:00 hrs: Return on board for lunch and brief rest.

15:00 hrs: Depart by an AC coach to visit the Gandhi museum (Rani Mangammal Palace). The building that houses the Gandhi memorial museum, Madurai is the historic Tamukkam Palace belonging to Rani Mangammal of Nayak Dynasty built about 1670 A.D. It was in 1955 the palace with about 13 acres of land was gifted by the Tamil Nadu State Government to the All India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi for the purpose of housing Gandhi memorial museum. The museum was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru on 15 April 1959. Among the exhibits at the museum is part of the blood-stained garment worn by Gandhiji when he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. The museum contains a ‘Visual Biography of Bapuji’ containing photos, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, quotations and some of the selected photostat copies of many of the letters written by him.

16:00 hrs: Return to the comforts of the Golden Chariot to relax on board.

18:00 hrs: Visit the Thirumalai Nayak Palace for sound and light show.

19:30 hrs: Return to the comforts of The Golden Chariot, for dinner and overnight on board as the train moves to Nagercoil.

Day 6 Madurai - Nagercoil

Early morning arrival at Nagercoil Railway Station.

05:00 hrs: Depart by an AC coach (30 minutes’ drive one way) to sunrise point at Kanyakumari. This location is the southernmost tip of Peninsular India & meeting place of three oceans- the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian sea.

07:00 hrs: Breakfast on board The Golden Chariot and brief rest.

09:30 hrs: Depart by an AC coach (30 minutes’ journey one way) for guided sightseeing tour of 17th Century built Padmanabhapuram Wooden Palace, one of hallmarks of traditional Kerala style architecture.

13:00 hrs: Return to the comforts of The Golden Chariot, lunch on board as the train moves to Kocchuveli.

15:30 hrs: Arrival at Kocchuveli Station, depart by an AC coach to Vivanta - Taj Kovalam for Hi-Tea by the beach, cultural show followed by dinner at the hotel.

10:30 hrs: Return on board the Golden Chariot and rest as the train departs for Alleppey.

Day 7 Alleppey (Kerala Backwaters) – Kochi – Bangalore

10:00 hrs: Post breakfast on board the Golden Chariot, depart by an AC coach to Alleppey jetty point and board Kettuvallam (traditional houseboat having coir ropes tied in knots holding the entire wooden plank structure together) to enjoy cruise through backwaters of Punnamada Lake.

13:00 hrs: Lunch at Punnamada Lake resort.

14:30 hrs: Depart to Fort Kochi by an AC coach for half day guided sightseeing tour visiting Chinese fishing nets, shopping in mattancherry, Jews Town and local spice market.

18:00 hrs: Return to the comforts of The Golden Chariot for dinner and overnight on board as the train moves to Bangalore.

NOTE: After dropping passengers at Alleppey, the train runs empty to Cochin.

Day 8 Bangalore Return

Enjoy your breakfast aboard the train as it arrives to the Yeshwantpur Railway Station in Bangalore. On your arrival in the city you will be given a warm farewell to mark the end of this memorable journey.

  • Advice departure dates with number of persons & cabins required.
  • To process the booking we require name/sex/nationality of all the passengers with passport & scan.
  • Booking request made less than 45 days before train departure will be confirmed on receipt of one time full payment.
  • Indian nationals can forward photo id proof (passport; driving license; adhaar card).
  • Saloon/cabin will be allocated on date of depart with boarding cards.
  • Advice arrival/depart details in Bangalore & interest to book hotels through us.

Important Note:

  • The Golden Chariot is operated & managed by Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation and our liability is limited to that of booking agent only.
  • Overseas guests are requests to pre-purchase Tour Insurance from country of origin of travel.
  • It is suggested to arrive in Bangalore one day prior to your train journey.
  • At times, due to local logistics if certain scheduled sightseeing tours or activities are cancelled - no refund will be made to passenger.

  • Request for cancellation must be made in writing & acknowledged by Bliss Touristic.
  • On cancellation, refund will be made.
  • Certain amount of the ticket value will be deducted as mentioned below.

No show/ En route termination of tour/amendment

  • No Show - In case of No Show / Non-arrival of the guest, no refund or adjustment in future travel will be possible. The whole amount shall be treated as forfeited.
  • En route termination of tour - In case of termination of tour by the guest, for any reasons, no refund or adjustment for future travel will be possible. The amount for unused portion of the tour shall be treated as forfeited.
  • Amendment - Is only possible under the circumstances like Natural Disaster / Natural Calamity or Serious Health Problem's (this needs to be supported by doctor's certificate) and is subject to availability. No refunds are possible and every case will be decided on merits on a case to case basis. No amendment will be permissible in case of booking of groups or complete train.
