Day 2 In Yogyakarta

Post breakfast, depart at 8:30 hrs for a cultural sightseeing tour through the city. Our guide will bring you to the Kraton (Sultan’s Palace). Walking through the remains of past centuries, you will come to understand the history of this artistic city. It was built in 1756 by Sri Sultan Hamengkubowono-I, and there is also a model of traditional Japanese palace architecture in the centre of the municipality. Over 25,000 people live within the greater Kraton compound named Taman Sari, which contains its own market, shops, batik and silver cottage industries, schools and mosques.

Afterwards, continue to Kota Gede, which has been famous as the hub of the Yogyakarta’s silver industry since the 1930’s. This fairly old town, which is now a suburb of Yogyakarta, was the first capital of the Mataram Kingdom, and was founded by Panembahan Senopati in 1582. Visit the busy silver workshops to watch their process.

Lunch at local restaurant

Post lunch, visit the world’s largest Buddhist monument complex Borobudur, a spectacular structure built around 800 AD. Looming out of a patchwork of bottle-green paddies and swaying palm tops, this colossal Buddhist relic is one of the continent’s marvels. After the decline of Buddhism and the shift of power to East Java, the monument was abandoned. This was soon after its completion. For centuries the complex lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash. Climb up to the top and enjoy a wonderful view on the Menoreh Mountains. Enough time is given to stroll around the complex and to discover its beauty. Afterwards, we go on to visit the nearby temples, such as Pawon Temple and Mendut Temple.

Later in the afternoon, return to hotel.

Overnight stay at the hotel.

In the very early morning, at 4:00 hrs, depart for Penanjakan to witness the beautiful sunrise (if weather permits). Then the trip continues across the sand-sea to reach the foot of Mount Bromo, as the starting point to climb up the stairs to the crater.

The spectacular view of the range of volcanoes (Bromo, Batok and Semeru) is revealed along with the rising morning sun.

  • There is a possibility for a horse-back (pony ride), at supplementary cost.
  • This morning’s trekking is not suitable for elderly clients, or clients with walking difficulties.
  • Please note that the ideal time to visit Bromo is during the dry season, from April to November. It is cold at any time of year in these mountains, and night temperatures can get down to around 2-5 Celsius.
  • The Bromo Tengger National Park is a popular getaway destination for local tourists, so the platform on the peak of Mt. Penanjakan can be very busy during weekends and public holidays.

Afterwards, return to hotel for refreshments and check-out before departing for Banyuwangi.

Lunch en-route in a local restaurant.

Check-in at the Ijen Resort, perched on the edge of the rainforest in the foothills of the volcanoes.

Dinner and overnight at the Ijen Resort.

Day 5 Mt. Ijen Excursion – Bali (293km/12hrs)

After an early wake-up call and breakfast, depart in our vehicle through the rural villages, coffee and clove plantations, and then into one of Java’s last rainforests. Humidity, wildlife, giant ferns and big trees cover the slope of the mountain.

Arrive at the Park Ranger’s Post and begin the 90 minute hike to Ijen Crater, along a shady track with spectacular views. The stunning view is unveiled at a 2883 metres altitude.

The lake’s eerie colour and smoke, wafting from bright yellow sulphur deposits, creates a landscape that is both barren and vibrant. Watch miners descend into the crater then re-emerge, carrying up to 80 kilos of ore in bamboo baskets along the treacherous path.

Afterwards, walk down the mountain and return back to the hotel.

After a short rest, check-out and continue the trip to Bali via Ketapang Harbour.

Lunch en-route in a local restaurant.

Late afternoon arrival in Bali, and drop off at your hotel or Bali Airport.

  • Please be prepared for a long trip from Ijen to Ubud, Bali. It takes approximately 5 hrs, but it is subject to road traffic and some waiting time for crossing the strait via ferry.
